Radiolaria

Radiolarians are microscopic creatures that still live
in cool oceans today. Unlike most animals, their skeleton
is not made of lime, but of silica or opal.

When the radiolarians die, their pebbly skeletons slowly
sink to the ocean floor, forming a radiolarian sludge.

In the course of time this is solidified to form radiolarite
rock. This very hard rock was therefore often used for the manufacture of tools in the Stone Age.
